The Crossing Guard

This morning while driving to work, I entered a school zone and passed the crossing guard near our home. The crossing guard waved at me, like we were old friends, and then yelled, “Good Morning”. This immediately brought a smile to my face and I yelled “good morning”, back. It seemed to start my day off right and so I moved on with a more optimistic attitude on the driving conditions of the morning commute. The great thing about this awesome example is that he does it EVERY morning. I have passed him multiple times and without a doubt, “Good Morning” is hollered out accompanied by a wave. And not only does he wave to me, he waves and yells that to every person on his side of the road, as they slowly drive through the school zone. His small act of kindness touches every passerby for nearly an hour on their way to wherever it is they’re going in the morning, and then again in the afternoon. (He still waves in the afternoon to everyone.) In reflection, I can’t help but wonder what would happen if I took the same initiative to make someone else’s day better by extending a small act of kindness.

love the post. Isn't it true? It is always the small things that make the biggest difference. What a great reminder to enjoy the simple things and share your happiness.

I love that story! It's amazing what a simple wave and nice greeting can do for your mood. And just like it makes our day when someone gives a simple gesture of kindness, the giver must also feel wonderful to have improved a life. Thank you so much for sharing that! It goes to show that even though we live in troubling times, there are still so many kind, and optimistic people to set examples.

The interesting thing about this is that I bet it makes people more aware of their speed in a positive way. Many crossing guards I have seen will yell or make hand motions to slow drivers down, but I bet there is rarely a moment when someone wants to speed pass the crossing guard who is wishing them good morning. What a positive example!
